Elekta Acquires Resonant Medical

William Blair & Company’s 40th Healthcare IT M&A Transaction Since 2003


June 17, 2010 - William Blair & Company announces the success of its client, Resonant Medical Inc., in connection with its acquisition by Elekta AB for a total consideration of USD $28.5 million. William Blair & Company served as exclusive financial advisor to Resonant Medical for the transaction. This transaction represents William Blair & Company’s 104th cross-border transaction since 2003.

Resonant Medical, based in Montreal, Canada, develops systems for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) of soft tissues using latest generation, 3-D ultrasound technology. The company’s integrated software solutions have been developed in cooperation with leading academic institutions to improve treatment accuracy for cancer in the prostate, breast, liver, cervix, uterus, bladder, as well as head and neck. Resonant Medical’s equipment is in daily clinical use in the United States, Canada, Italy, The Netherlands, and Ireland, and its research collaborators are considered among the world leaders in their field.

Resonant Medical had raised venture funding from MDS Health Ventures, Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund II, iNovia Capital, MMV Financial, BDC Venture Capital, Ventures West Management, Desjardins Venture Capital, GrowthWorks Canadian Fund, and Lumira Capital Corp.

Elekta, based in Sweden, is a human-care company pioneering significant innovations and clinical solutions for treating cancer and brain disorders. Elekta develops sophisticated, state-of-the-art tools and treatment-planning systems for radiation therapy and radiosurgery, as well as workflow-enhancing software systems across the spectrum of cancer care.

William Blair & Company was engaged by Resonant Medical to evaluate various strategic and financial alternatives including a sale of the company. In connection with the engagement, the William Blair & Company investment banking team marketed the company to a targeted group of potential strategic acquirers and assisted in negotiating the key elements of the letter of intent and definitive purchase agreement.
