Investment Process

Although each potential investment is unique in scope and size, our method of selection is a proven, step-by-step process that works toward building a strong, mutually beneficial partnership.

Sending a Business Plan

Please send all executive summaries or business plans to info@williamblair.com. Please do not send any materials to WBCP professionals directly. However, you may reference their names in sending materials.

After reviewing your plan, we will the follow-up with you. Please do not contact us directly.

Business Plan Review

After reading a business plan or speaking with management, we will visit the company and view operations first hand. Next, we present prospective investments to our partners for consideration and discussion of critical issues. We endeavor to offer a preliminary expression of interest quickly.

Detailed Evaluation

Our investment team conducts a broad array of due diligence, including: conducting market research; assessing business and market conditions, management, products, competition, customers and vendors; developing financial models; and benchmarking performance against industry peers.

We negotiate investment terms, develop a financial and ownership structure, contact other potential investors and lenders (as needed), and submit a letter of intent. After mutually agreeing on the terms of the transaction, the final step is documentation and funding of the transaction.

Ongoing Commitment

After investing, we actively participate on the company’s board of directors and maintain a regular dialog with company management. Our post-closing contributions often include providing or raising debt and equity capital, sourcing and negotiating add-on acquisitions and assisting in senior management recruiting. In addition to our role as a board member, we assist in other activities, such as business development and strategy.
